How to Improve Your Child's Spoken English at Home

Practical, everyday ways to build your child's spoken English at home: from conversation habits to storytelling games that grow vocabulary and confidence.

Speaking confidently is one of the most valuable gifts you can help your child develop, and the home is where it grows best. Children learn to speak well not from drills, but from rich, relaxed conversation and lots of gentle encouragement.

Here are practical ways to build your child’s spoken English at home, whatever their starting point.

Talk with them, not just to them

The single biggest driver of spoken language is conversation. Aim for back-and-forth exchanges rather than one-way instructions:

  • Ask open questions that need more than “yes” or “no”: “What was the best part of your day?” instead of “Did you have a good day?”
  • Give them time to answer. Resist the urge to fill silences. Thinking time builds better sentences.
  • Show you’re listening by responding to what they said, then nudging gently: “Oh, the slide was fast! How did it feel?”

Narrate everyday moments

Cooking, tidying, walking to the shops: turn ordinary routines into language-rich moments. Describe what you’re doing, introduce new words naturally, and invite your child to do the same. “I’m chopping the onions. They’re making my eyes watery! Can you describe how they smell?”

Read aloud, and talk about the story

Story time isn’t just for reading; it’s a goldmine for speaking. After (or during) a book:

  • Ask your child to predict what happens next.
  • Pause to wonder aloud: “Why do you think she did that?”
  • Let them retell the story in their own words.

This builds vocabulary, sentence structure and the confidence to express ideas.

Play storytelling and role-play games

Imaginative play is brilliant for spoken English. Try:

  • Shop or restaurant role-play, taking turns as customer and shopkeeper.
  • “And then…” stories, where you each add one sentence to build a tale together.
  • Puppet or toy conversations, which help shy children speak more freely through a character.

These are exactly the kinds of activities we use in our Spoken English course: stories, role-plays and joyful conversation that grow real confidence.

Build vocabulary, gently

New words are the building blocks of expression. To grow them naturally:

  • Introduce one or two interesting words a day and use them often.
  • Offer richer alternatives: instead of “nice,” try delicious, cosy, kind.
  • Play word games: opposites, categories (“name three animals that swim”), and rhymes.

Create a pressure-free zone

Confidence is fragile, so protect it:

  • Don’t over-correct. If your child says something incorrectly, simply model it back correctly without making a fuss: “I goed to the park” → “You went to the park? What did you play?”
  • Praise effort and ideas, not just accuracy.
  • Let them make mistakes. A child who feels safe to try will speak far more than one who fears being corrected.

Make English part of play

Songs, rhymes, simple jokes and riddles all strengthen spoken English while feeling like fun. Sing along to favourite songs, learn a new rhyme each week, and giggle over silly knock-knock jokes. Humour is wonderful for language.

When to consider a little extra support

Home is the perfect place to build everyday confidence. But if you’d like your child to develop clearer pronunciation, richer vocabulary and the assurance to speak up in groups, a structured, live programme can accelerate that beautifully, especially with an educator who understands how children learn to communicate.

Our Spoken English programme (designed for ages 5–7) does just that, through stories, role-plays and interactive activities in small, friendly live classes. If you’d like to see it in action, book a free demo: 30 relaxed minutes, no pressure, just a chance to watch your child shine.
